If you are into 1:1 replica watches, you must have heard about “free sprung movement”. New players may ask, what is free sprung movement? If I use professional terms, you may still get confused. Let me explain it simple. The real meaning is: when you look at the back of the watch, there are no two small posts under the shock absorber. Before, when we buy watches with transparent caseback, we worry a lot. People can tell it is fake at one glance by seeing those posts. Now factories upgraded the movement. This big weak point that lasted for many years, finally got fixed.

Free sprung movement vs regulated movement comparison photo

If you are new and don’t know their difference, check this picture:

Left one is FREE-SPRUNG. Under the shock absorber, it is clean, no adjustment parts. The balance wheel area looks whole and closed at first sight.

Right one is REGULATED, traditional regulated structure. You can clearly see black regulator and posts under shock absorber. The watch adjust time by this hairspring system.

This picture was originally used by genuine watch fans to tell real and fake movements. But now it gets discussed a lot in high end replica watch market. The reason is simple: top factories start to modify this part.

Are replica watch free sprung movements real or fake?

It can be real or fake, need to check case by case. We all know after real technical upgrade, it will become a selling point and a good reason to raise price. Free sprung movement is same. So not all “free sprung” worth you pay more money. Now three types exist in market:

1. True free sprung

For example APS factory 26240 V2 version. Open the watch, you can see four adjustable weights on balance wheel. The structure logic is close to genuine watch. Only this kind counts as real structure upgrade.

2. Fake free sprung It has two sub types

First is hidden regulated structure. Take VS factory Panda Daytona free sprung version as example. They just put the regulator posts under the bridge. When you look through transparent back, you cannot see it by eyes. But if you use macro lens or open the watch, you still find traditional regulated parts. They only change the look, no real structure upgrade.

Second is cut and fake free sprung. Some DDF factory versions use this way. They cut or cover original regulator posts. The balance wheel looks bare without any weight parts. It only looks “no posts”. This is not real upgrade. Its adjustment precision and long time stability even worse than original regulated movement. No matter which fake type, they have same big problem: no balance wheel weight screws, do not have real free sprung structure like genuine watch.

Common traps new players fall into

1. Think free sprung always the best

This is the most common wrong idea. For genuine watches, yes it is high level config. But it is very hard to adjust, only senior watchmaker can do it well. Replica watch with free sprung movement runs more stable in theory. But real performance still depends on base movement, assembly quality and adjustment work. Especially these new versions just come out, long term stability do not have enough market test yet. So free sprung is just one structure feature.

2. Ignore movement long term stability
Some popular good movements like Dandong 4131, Dandong 3285 are regulated movement. They have many years market test, low repair rate. Daily wear stability is trustable. The new free sprung versions changed structure, but base movement still same. Long time performance not fully tested. These unknown risks mean you cannot ignore movement stability.

3. Ignore your own real need
If you almost never flip watch to check movement, or you care more about case shape, dial texture and hand finish. Then free sprung is not your key need. Many people chase this hot selling feature and pay extra money, but do not get the improvement they really want. All watch players should remember this point.

Is replica watch worth buying?

If you cannot decide, ask yourself what you really want. If you want everything perfect, my suggestion is:

If your main need is daily wear, stable and good value. High quality replica watches with mature movements are enough. You do not need spend extra money just for free sprung. These regulated movements have many years polishing, low failure rate, good after sales support. Daily time keeping is reliable. Very friendly for new players, less chance to get trapped.

If you know movement well and care about detail recognition. You can pick watches with true free sprung structure. But you need accept risk: new movement stability still need time to prove, compare with old mature movement, there are some unknown risks.

Recommend replica watches with true free sprung

Now not many models in market have real free sprung structure. Most are hidden regulated, cut fake version or only visual clean look. These are popular ones discussed in watch community:

APS factory 26240 V2 version: This one is hot topic. Open the caseback you can directly see adjustable weights on balance wheel. Not just decoration on bridge. Movement structure follow genuine design, no hidden regulator.

QF factory Rolex Panda Daytona 4131 version: QF released free sprung movement earlier than VS, more market experience. Many people struggle between VS and QF Panda Daytona. If you look for true free sprung structure, choose QF version first.

ER factory Datejust 41mm 3235 version: This watch has closed caseback, but built with true free sprung movement. This case is rare. ER finished full true free sprung structure, balance wheel with full weight screws. It has better potential for time adjustment. Great choice for office daily wear.

Words from senior watch player

From another view, few people really check movement. Top replica watch movement already good enough for daily use. I am a 10 year watch player. I hope factories spend more money on watch case, crown, dial, hand mold and polishing, make outside details better. Of course, if one factory can make true free sprung plus perfect outer look at same time, I will think they use magic! I hope this day come soon, end this unbalanced situation. I know perfect is impossible, but at least reduce those small regrets.
